Inlays are used to fill in cavities that occur in teeth with a large surface area, such as those normally used for chewing. An inlay is made to fit the cavity in the tooth exactly and is then bonded into place. This helps to create a very hardwearing and durable surface, which should hopefully prevent any future cracks or chipping.
Whereas an inlay repairs the central part of the tooth, an onlay sits over the raised part of your tooth and is used to repair the cusp of a tooth (or teeth) that has been damaged or has decayed. Inlays and onlays are most often made of composite resin, porcelain, or precious metal such as gold. We can help you decide which material would be best for your inlay or onlay, depending on your oral health history and needs.
